Four months, 150 days and twelve races will mark the wait for the arrival of the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix. However, the Red Bull Ring is already ready to pose before the most curious wearing its new design.
The Austrian circuit has successfully completed the reconstruction that began in November 2021 at Spielberg, revealing a new MotoGP chicane in the northwest part of the circuit.
More attractive and safer for MotoGP
In this process – in close collaboration with the FIM, Dorna and the FIA – the famous circuit designer, Hermann Tilke, has taken a leading role, and one of the main objectives of this reform was safety.
The Red Bull Ring returned to the MotoGP calendar in 2016 and was heavily criticized for its risk, with several riders unhappy about track conditions. In order to increase the safety index, during the Austrian Grand Prix the top speed of the MotoGP prototypes will be significantly reduced in the second corner.
“The speed reduction was necessary on this section of the track. The planning was a real challenge due to the topography of the terrain, above all”, assessed Hermann Tilke. “With exhaustive examinations, 15 drafts were made before the final layout concept, which saw the new chicane as the ideal solution.”

Two 90 degree corners make up this fast new double apex chicane which guarantees a real challenge that will test all the skills of the MotoGP riders, while maintaining its ten corners.
“It all started for us with the F1 project. Since then, we have continued to make plans to make small and more significant changes to the Red Bull Ring . It is a magnificent circuit with an impressive landscape,” said the German on the official website of the championship. .
“The track is rightly loved by spectators and drivers alike. For us, it’s always great to come to Spielberg and meet many old acquaintances and friends,” concluded Hermann Tilke .
