With two minutes to go in Q2, Zarco set the fastest time. On his next lap he kept pushing, but at turn 5 he lost the front end and went down. The stewards brought out a yellow flag and the rest of the drivers had to cut, which prevented anyone from improving and the Frenchman scored his first pole position of the year.

The Pramac Ducati team rider cut Fabio Quartararo ‘s streak of five consecutive pole positions, who was 11 thousandths short of adding the sixth. Marc Márquez was also beaten in qualifying for the first time at the Sachsenring since 2010 and will start 5th. The back of the grid at Sachsenring will be full of important figures, such as Valentino Rossi (15th), Joan Mir (16th) and Maverick Viñales (21st).
