New research carried out by experts at the University of Georgia (USA) and published in the journal Personal Relationships highlights that one of the keys to improving relationships between couples could be gratitude. We talk about the power of giving thanks.
To reach this conclusion, the researchers conducted a telephone survey of 468 married individuals who were asked about financial well-being, communication between them, and their expressions of gratitude or how often they thanked their partner. The researchers found that gratitude was the best, most significant, predictor of marriage / partner quality .
” We have found that feeling appreciated and valued by the spouse directly influences personal perception of marriage, interest in the relationship and the belief that it will last,” explains Ted Futris, co-author of the study.
The research suggests that even if the couple is experiencing situations of anguish and difficulties in other areas that could lead to a divorce process , their gratitude to each other helped to protect the marriage from these extremes – like a shield protector- and to promote positive outcomes for the relationship.
“ This is the first study to document the protective effect that recognition by a spouse can have on a marriage. We believe that the finding is significant, as it highlights a practical tool that can help couples to strengthen their relationship , especially if they are not good communicators in conflict situations ”, clarifies Barton.
Financial problems, stress … these and other situations are the perfect breeding ground for an argument. However, the problem is not arguing but how we do it . Now we also know that if we are more grateful to each other, we will also be taking care of the good health of our partner.
