At the age of 24, not only do we stop being adolescents, but according to a new study by Simon Fraser University (Canada), a person reaches their peak in terms of motor and cognitive development at this age . From here, it begins to experience a decline.
The study, published in the journal Plos One , tried to find out at what point in life we begin to suffer a decline in everything related to our motor skills and their relationship with cognitive performance. To do this, the researchers analyzed the online performance records of 3,305 Starcraft 2 (Blizzard) players between the ages of 16 and 44.
Online player performance records are a very valuable database, representing thousands of representative hours of cognitive strategies in real time . Thus, the researchers were able to deeply analyze how the players responded to their opponents and how long it took to react.
The examination of the total volume of data found that “after the age of 24, players show a slowdown in their reactions; this decline in cognitive performance was present even in the most skilled players, ”says Joe Thompson, lead author of the study.
In any case, the results also suggest that although we become slower in response with age, the experience acquired over the years helps us to function more efficiently and therefore compensate for this loss of speed caused by age.
