The statistics that the 2022 F1 British GP left us

As after every grand prix, at Motorsport.com we offer you the compilation of the most important statistics of the weekend. These are the most interesting facts and figures that the tenth round of the 2022 season has left us, the British GP, held at the Silverstone track.

2022 British GP stats and drivers

Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing RB18, Carlos Sainz, Ferrari F1-75, and the rest of the cars at the start

– The British GP has celebrated its 73rd edition in 2022. Waiting for the Italian GP to arrive, it is the most disputed race in the history of Formula 1.

– The Silverstone circuit hosted F1 for the 57th time. The premier class of motorsport has only visited Monza (71) and Monaco (68) on more occasions.

– Fernando Alonso made his 344th start in F1, which places him six shy of the record for most grand prix races held, which is still held by Kimi Raikkonen (350).

– Carlos Sainz has contested his 150th Grand Prix. He is the 42nd driver to reach this milestone since the creation of the Formula 1 World Championship: the first was Graham Hill in 1973 and the last, Max Verstappen in Montreal.

The classification

Carlos Sainz, Ferrari, after qualifying

– Carlos Sainz has achieved the first pole position of his F1 career. He became the 104th driver to achieve at least one pole position in the history of the category.

– Pole position came after 149 Grand Prix without achieving it. Since 1950, only Sergio Pérez had to wait longer (213 races before his pole position at the 2022 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix).

– It is also the first time that a pole position has been achieved by a Spanish driver other than Fernando Alonso. The last time the two-time world champion took pole was almost ten years ago, at the 2012 German GP.

– It was Ferrari’s 237th pole position as a team, and 238th as an engine manufacturer, which are the records in their respective categories.

– It was the first time since 2013 that Mercedes did not set the fastest time in Q3 at Silverstone. Last year, Max Verstappen took pole, but it was thanks to the sprint race, while Lewis Hamilton had been quickest in Friday’s more traditional-style qualifying.

– It was the fourth front row of Carlos Sainz’s career (as many as Robert Kubica or Eddie Irvine) and the 35th of Max Verstappen.

– Leaving aside Canada, where Leclerc did not attempt to advance to Q3 due to the penalties he had received for changing parts of his engine, Silverstone was the first race in which the Monegasque failed to start from the front row.

– For the seventh time in ten grands prix, the first two rows were monopolized by Ferrari and Red Bull.

– Guanyu Zhou, who managed to qualify in ninth place, achieved the best grid position of his short F1 career in his second appearance in Q3.

-Tenth, Nicholas Latifi achieved the best qualifying result of his career and went through to his first Q3 in F1. Bear in mind that he already started 10th at the Belgian Grand Prix last year, but only set the 12th fastest time of the session and took advantage of other drivers’ penalties.

The race

Winner Carlos Sainz, Ferrari, celebrates in the parc fermé

– Carlos Sainz achieved his first victory, becoming the 112th winner in Formula 1.

– This is Ferrari’s 241st win as a team, and 242nd as an engine manufacturer, which are still records.

– Sainz had to wait until his 150th grand prix to win, only Sergio Pérez took longer (190 races).

– Lewis Hamilton set his 60th fastest race lap, but is still far from Michael Schumacher’s record of 77.

– It was the 12th podium finish in Formula 1 for Carlos Sainz, who equaled Stefan Johansson and Robert Kubica , the 21st for Sergio Pérez, who beat Giuseppe Farina and John Watson, and the 185th for Lewis Hamilton, who holds the record. Sainz was, until now, one of the drivers with the most podiums without victory.

– Hamilton took his 10th consecutive podium finish at Silverstone and 13th overall on the British track, a new record. The previous one was 12 podiums for Michael Schumacher in Imola, Barcelona and Montreal.

– Hamilton also led a race for the first time this year. This is his 16th consecutive season leading a grand prix (2007-2022), also beating Michael Schumacher’s record (1992-2006).

– Against all odds, Jim Clark remains the driver who has led the most laps in the British Grand Prix (365 to 342 for Hamilton).

– George Russell had been the only driver to have scored points (and even finished in the top five) in every race so far in 2022, but his retirement shortly after the start has ended that streak.

– Fernando Alonso has scored 26 points in the last five Grands Prix, after only scoring 2 in the first five.

-Charles Leclerc is, by far, the one with the worst result among the top six in the last five races, with 34 points. He is far from Verstappen (96), Pérez (81), Sainz (74), Hamilton (57) and Russell (52). The Monegasque had scored 104 points in the first five rounds.

– Mick Schumacher scored his first points in Formula 1, crossing the finish line in eighth position, two tenths behind Max Verstappen. His parents were teammates at Benetton in 1994.

– Fernando Alonso has already covered 92,684 kilometers in Formula 1 races, beating Kimi Raikkonen’s record of 92,636 km. The Finn has completed more laps (18.621 vs. 18.549), but the Alpine driver is expected to exceed this figure at the French Grand Prix.

– George Russell, Guanyu Zhou and Alex Albon retired on the first lap for the first time in their careers, and only Lando Norris has yet to do so. Among contemporary drivers, the award goes to Nico Hulkenberg, with 11 DNFs in the first lap, not far from Jarno Trulli’s record (14).

– Zhou has recorded four DNFs in the last six Grands Prix. He is the driver who has driven the least in the race this season, having traveled only 68.60% of the scheduled kilometers.
