As after every grand prix, we at Motorsport.com have compiled the best stats from the weekend. These are the most interesting facts after the ninth round of the year, the Canadian Grand Prix.
F1 Canadian Grand Prix 2022 stats and drivers
– This has been the 51st edition of the Canadian Grand Prix, one of the eight most disputed events in the history of Formula 1.
– Montreal’s Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve hosted F1 for the 41st time (and the first since 2019). The premier class of motorsport has only visited Monza, Monaco, Silverstone and Spa-Francorchamps on more occasions.
– Fernando Alonso made his 343rd start in F1, which places him seven behind the record for most Grand Prix races held by Kimi Raikkonen (350).
– Max Verstappen entered his 150th Grand Prix at the age of 24. He is the 41st driver to reach this milestone since the creation of the Formula 1 World Championship. The first was Graham Hill in 1973… at the age of 44.
F1 Canadian Grand Prix 2022 Qualifying Stats
– Charles Leclerc was relegated to the back of the grid due to an engine penalty, relinquishing pole position and ending his run of four in a row.
– Max Verstappen took the 15th pole of his career, equaling… Charles Leclerc.
– This is Red Bull’s 76th pole position as a manufacturer and third as an engine manufacturer.
– Max Verstappen was part of the front row for the 34th time in his career, equaling René Arnoux and Rubens Barrichello. Fernando Alonso, for his part, equaled Jack Brabham, with 38 appearances.
– Alonso hadn’t managed to start a race on the front row for ten years, at the 2012 German Grand Prix, where he took pole.
– At 40 years, 10 months and 21 days, Alonso is the oldest driver to start from the front row of a Grand Prix since Michael Schumacher at the 2012 Chinese GP (43 years, 3 months and 12 days). He is also the second oldest driver to occupy the front row (behind Schumacher, therefore) since the end of 1994.
– Fourth, Lewis Hamilton ended the worst qualifying streak of his career, with five finishes outside the top 5 (13th, 6th, 6th, 8th, 7th).
– With Kevin Magnussen 5th and Mick Schumacher 6th, Haas achieved its best grid result since the 2018 German Grand Prix, when Magnussen was 5th and Romain Grosjean 6th.
– Five different teams (Red Bull, Alpine, Ferrari, Mercedes and Haas) made up the top 5 on the grid for the second time this season, after Imola (Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren, Haas and Alpine). We have to go back to the 2021 Belgian GP to see six teams doing the same thing (Red Bull, Williams, Mercedes, McLaren, Aston Martin and AlphaTauri)
– Also, the last time the top of the table was so diverse multiple times in a single season was in 2009, when there were also five different teams in the top five twice.
– Guanyu Zhou reached Q3 for the first time in his young career.
The 2022 F1 Canadian Grand Prix race stats
– Max Verstappen got his 26th victory in Formula 1, and the first in Montreal. It is the 20th different GP that he has won, and the 18th different circuit that has seen him triumph.
– The Dutchman put an end to the “curse of FP1” this season, as no driver who has set the fastest time in the first free practice of a grand prix has so far managed to win it.
– It was Red Bull’s 82nd victory as a constructor, overtaking Lotus to become the fifth most successful constructor in history. His next target is Williams, with 114 wins. It is also the seventh victory as an engine manufacturer.
– It is only the second time in its history that Red Bull has achieved at least six wins in a row, following Sebastian Vettel’s nine at the end of the 2013 season.
– Max Verstappen got his 67th podium in F1, as many as Valtteri Bottas. It was Carlos Sainz’s 11th appearance in the top three, as many as Chris Amon, Patrick Tambay and Jarno Trulli. Lewis Hamilton reached 184, which is still a record.
– His second place means that Carlos Sainz now has 11 podiums without a victory, as many as Chris Amon.
– Sainz got his second career fast lap, equaling François Cevert, Heikki Kovalainen and Kevin Magnussen.
– Fourth in Montreal, George Russell remains the only driver to have finished in the top 5 of all Grands Prix this season, always between third and fifth. He is also the only one to have scored points in every race.
– Sixth, Esteban Ocon equaled his best finish of the season and Alpine’s best finish of 2022, as the Frenchman had also finished sixth in Saudi Arabia.
– Guanyu Zhou, who rose to eighth position after Alonso’s suspension, achieved the best result of his career.
– Following his penalty, Fernando Alonso dropped to ninth and scored points for the 222nd time in his F1 career, beating Michael Schumacher. Only Lewis Hamilton has a higher figure (257).
– Tenth, Lance Stroll managed to break into the points for the third time in his fourth grand prix as a local driver, having started from 17th on the grid. The only time he didn’t score points was when he started 16th and had a run-in with Brendon Hartley on the first lap.
– It was the first time that Sebastian Vettel, twelfth, had failed to score points in Canada, even though his grid position (16th) was better than in 2008 (20th) and 2015 (18th).
