The tire keys for the 2022 F1 Canadian GP

Formula 1 is back in action non-stop, and the Montreal street circuit is ready to host the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend.

On its return to the Gilles Villeneuve circuit, Pirelli has decided to run the following compounds for the 2022 Canadian GP:

  • C3 (the hardest, white in color)
  • C4 (middle, yellow)
  • C5 (the soft one, red in color)

As usual on urban tracks, Pirelli has opted for the softest compounds in its range for 2022, which, let’s remember, ranges from C1 (the hardest) to C5 (the softest).

  • After two years of absence, the Canadian Grand Prix returns to the calendar with the softest compounds in the range, which had been chosen in the last race held at the Gilles Villeneuve and which were used in the last two races on the calendar (Monaco and Azerbaijan). C3 will be hard, C4 will be medium, and C5 will be soft.
  • In 2019, the winning strategy was one stop , starting with medium and switching to hard.
  • Montreal has some elements in common with Baku, such as a focus on traction and braking, and a rapidly evolving track surface, but with lower speeds and cooler temperatures.
  • Time has been the protagonist on many occasions at the Canadian Grand Prix. In fact, the 2011 race holds the record for being the longest in Formula 1 history, thanks to six safety car periods and a long break that brought the event to a halt for several hours. It is never easy to predict conditions and this year, in addition, there is a reasonable chance of rain.

As usual, Mario Isola , responsible for Pirelli’s motorsports section, offered his opinion on the choice of tyres: “The Canadian Grand Prix presents a series of unknowns that the teams will have to reckon with: the weather is usually be variable, all available data is from three years ago, the range of tires is completely different from last time, with renewed compounds and structures, all this on a track that is not very frequented , which will determine a very high level of evolution “.

“Compared to last time in Montreal, the compounds should be more stable with wider windows of use, allowing drivers to push harder each run, with much less risk of overheating.”

“An interesting aspect of this circuit that could influence strategies is how quickly it takes to get through the pits: a driver can get in and out of the pit lane in less than 20 seconds , one of the lowest times on the calendar.”
