The triplets Eva, Sofía and Miguel come home after a month in the Neonatal ICU and an exceptional pregnancy with three bags and two placentas

The stories of overcoming babies and newborns never cease to amaze us. They show us that, despite the difficulties, they want to get ahead and many times they succeed thanks to medical advances and the care and pampering of professionals and their parents.

This is the case of the triplets Eva, Sofía and Miguel who have been discharged from the pediatric ICU of the Vithas Valencia 9 de Octubre Hospital, where they have been admitted for a month.

Her exceptional case began as early as her pregnancy, since her mother, Maria, had a triamniotic bicorial gestation or, in other words, three babies in three different bags fed by two placentas. Fortunately, and after a cesarean section, everything went well.

“The mother’s energy was vital”

María Tebar was admitted to hospital with contractions and a cesarean section was performed after the three babies had lung maturation. A delivery in which Miguel, weighing 1,850 grams, and Eva and Sofía, with 1,450 grams and 1,600 grams, respectively, were born.

Dr. Eugenio Blanes explains that “by protocol, with this exceptional type of pregnancy, you should try to hold out until week 34 at most, since, if not, problems could appear in the last weeks of pregnancy as you cannot feed the placentas to all babies “. For this reason, he points out that ” having reached 33 weeks plus 3 days was a great success. “

Doctor Ángel Arturo Blanes adds that it was also possible thanks to the mother:

“We managed to get to that great day mainly thanks to the energy that the mother wasted and the desire she had to hold them inside, and thus we were all able to help them achieve their dream.”

These experts point out that the organization and coordination of the Blanes Clinic with the pediatric team and that of the Vithas Hospital delivery room was key to the success of the delivery:

“A team of more than 16 people made up of the three gynecologists from the Blanes clinic in Valencia, six assistants to take care of us and the newborns, five pediatricians, the midwife and the anesthetist along with their nurse, three caretakers and cleaning staff ”.

This is the third birth of triplets that Dr. Ángel Blanes Espí attends in his more than 40 years of experience at the Vithas Valencia 9 de Octubre Hospital, and the first accompanied by his two children, also gynecologists: three specialists for three babies .

They evolved well from birth

The babies’ stay in the pediatric ICU went very well, as they evolved and adapted perfectly. According to Dr. Javier Miranda, head of the hospital’s pediatric unit, “fortunately, all three evolved well from the beginning” :

“Prolonged stays in neonatal units, especially in cases of multiple gestations like this one, test both the parents’ resistance and the hospital’s ability to adapt to their needs, and facilitate initial contact and consultation as much as possible. normal relationship between parents and their children.

And it is that despite the exceptional circumstances of the pandemic, he explains that they maintained free access to parents, support for breastfeeding and a certain degree of privacy in an isolated space when clinical circumstances allowed.

The first to be discharged was Miguel and, last week, his sisters Eva and Sofía. Upon leaving the ICU, his mother María thanked the Unit’s nurses, assistants and medical team for their involvement:

“We are very grateful because they have taken care of our children as if they were their own and have made our daily stay here like being with the family.”

We need happy endings like this to remind us that life is moving on and making its way strong in an age where Covid vaccines remain our best hope to get back to our normal routine before the coronavirus crossed our lives.

Touch is a very powerful connection with your baby: this is how you can...

As mothers - especially when we are first-timers - and we want to do what is best for the baby, we simply have to go with our instincts. I say this as someone who started motherhood having read a lot about it, but to whom time has taught precisely that.

When your family doesn't like the name you've chosen for your baby (and over...

One of the most transcendental decisions that are made in the incipient role of father and mother, when the baby is still in the womb, is deciding the name of your son or daughter. Trying to imagine what it will be like, discarding all those that you don't like or that remind you of someone you don't like (because let's not deny it, it's something we all do), and reaching consensus is not an easy job.
