The two Formula 1 drivers who were born on Christmas

One of the two has a particularly well-known surname, although he may not be the most famous member of the family, while the other achieved something unique in Formula 1, a record that has not been matched by anyone else in over fifty years.

The first is Wilson Fittipaldi , a pilot who spent his career in the shadow of his younger and brighter brother, Emerson. The Brazilian raced with Brabham in 1972 and 1973, then took a sabbatical before returning to Copersucar , a team that the Fittipaldi family had created directly.

His best result was a fifth place achieved in the 1973 German Grand Prix, while that same year he was also sixth in Argentina, adding a total of three points in Formula 1.

In addition, he is also remembered for being the father of another former Formula 1 driver, Christian Fittipaldi, who ran two seasons with Minardi and one with Footwork , scoring 12 points.

The surname returned to F1 in 2019, when Pietro Fittipaldi , (whose ‘great-uncle’ was the aforementioned Wilson), made his debut with Haas replacing Romain Grosjean.

The other driver born on Christmas Day is an Italian who wrote his name in the Formula 1 record book: Giancarlo Baghetti is, in fact, the only one* who managed to win on his debut day.

He did it at the 1961 French Grand Prix, at the wheel of a Ferrari 156 managed by the FISA team, with which he managed to beat Dan Gurney’s Porsche in the final part of the race, winning by just one tenth. Interestingly, that was also his only victory in Formula 1.

* Johnnie Parsons won the 1950 Indianapolis 500, the first that counted for the F1 world championship. The European pilots did not attend that race. Giusseppe Farina won the first race of the Formula 1 world championship, in 1950, so technically his victory also came on the day he made his debut in the championship.
