Various studies over the years have analyzed the advantages and disadvantages, as well as the effects and possible consequences that may occur depending on the type of childbirth that is had, both in the mother and baby, as well as in the short and long term.
A new study has found that delivering your first child by cesarean section is linked to an increased risk of spontaneous and induced preterm labor in the next pregnancy.
The study
Published in the journal BJOG: an International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology , the retrospective study analyzed the history of 16,340 women with two simple deliveries (that is, with a single baby) and a first delivery at term, in order to investigate the risk of preterm delivery in her second pregnancy, in relation to the mode of birth in the previous pregnancy.
According to the analysis carried out, it was found that there is a relationship between emergency cesarean delivery and the risk of spontaneous and induced preterm delivery in subsequent pregnancies. Remember that a delivery is considered premature when it happens before 37 weeks of gestation.
Compared with vaginal deliveries, having had a fully dilated emergency cesarean section or in the second phase of labor was associated with an increase in spontaneous preterm birth . In the cases of selective caesarean section, emergency caesarean sections with less than four centimeters of dilatation or between four and nine centimeters, these were found to increase the possibility of having an induced preterm labor.
The risks of cesarean sections
As we mentioned at the beginning, there are numerous studies that have talked about the risks involved in this important surgery , however there are still many cesarean sections that are still practiced without a true medical cause that justifies them.
In the case of subsequent deliveries and pregnancies, having a cesarean section increases the chances of secondary infertility and increases the risk of miscarriage, uterine rupture and placenta previa, to which we would now add the risk of premature delivery .
Remember that being born prematurely has consequences on the health of babies , since children who are born prematurely, and more those who are born very early, have a higher risk of developing neurodevelopmental disorders and gastrointestinal or respiratory problems.
