The police have already received several witnesses, said a police spokeswoman for the German Press Agency on Sunday. These would now be evaluated.

The day before, the investigators had heard witnesses and analyzed the evidence. On Saturday, the police asked other possible witnesses to come forward to confirm or refute the suspicion of illegal car racing. The spokeswoman on Sunday could not name a trend in the investigation.

In the accident in Barsinghausen, a two-year-old died at the scene of the accident on Friday. His six-year-old brother succumbed to his injuries in the hospital on Saturday night. The parents and two other people were seriously injured in the accident.

According to initial findings, a 39-year-old driver is said to have overtaken several vehicles and collided with various cars from oncoming traffic. Among them was the oncoming car of the family of four, in which the two small children were sitting.

According to investigators, there is a suspicion that the woman engaged in an illegal street race. Accordingly, the 39-year-old initially intended to overtake another car in a curve. However, the 39-year-old driver of this car accelerated and the two vehicles drove side by side for a longer period of time.

Later, the woman collided with the car of a 50-year-old man, who left the road with his car to the right and came to a stop in an adjacent field. She then reportedly collided with the family’s car, which was thrown off the road to the right by the force of the impact, overturned and came to rest on the roof of an adjacent paddock.

Most recently, the woman collided with the car of a 74-year-old driver who was driving directly behind the family.

The 39-year-old suspected cause of the accident, the 50-year-old driver and the children’s parents, a 29-year-old woman and a 37-year-old man, were seriously injured and taken to hospitals. The other two people involved in the accident were uninjured.

The fire brigade freed the trapped family from the car and resuscitated the two children, although any help came too late for the younger boy. Emergency chaplains took care of the psychological care of all those involved and the emergency services.

According to the police spokeswoman, the 39-year-old is approachable. The investigators questioned her accordingly on Saturday in the hospital. The 39-year-old man whose car tried to overtake the woman was unharmed. His driver’s license had already been revoked on the day of the accident.
