After the detonation last Tuesday in Leverkusen’s Chempark, four people were found dead. One seriously injured died in the hospital.
Cologne / Leverkusen – Six days after the explosion and the fire in a Leverkusen hazardous waste incineration plant, two people are still missing.
“No other people were recovered,” said a spokeswoman for the Cologne public prosecutor’s office on Monday at the request of the dpa. The public prosecutor’s office is investigating unknown persons on suspicion of negligent homicide and negligent causing of an explosion.
According to the Chempark operator Currenta, the clearing and salvage work will take a long time. A spokesman made it clear that there were also large pieces of debris, some of which were wedged into one another. Both precautionary measures and the ongoing investigation would need to be taken into account. “That will keep us busy for a while,” said the spokesman.
The massive explosion and the subsequent fire caused a huge cloud of smoke to rise over Leverkusen, and a little later soot particles fell. Local residents feared it could be toxic substances. In an initial analysis by the State Environment Agency, no residues of dioxin or dioxin-like substances were found. The experts measured very low values for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). dpa
