Two ships wrecked on the Rhine – shipping closed

A passenger cabin ship with 90 passengers on board has been stuck on the Rhine since Monday night. Now another ship was added.

Hagenbach / Germersheim – After a passenger cabin ship with about 90 passengers on board, another ship got stuck near Hagenbach in the Rhine on Tuesday night.

According to the police, this is a tanker that may have been damaged due to low water.

Not far from the scene of the accident, the passenger cabin ship was already wrecked in the thick fog on Monday night. Both ships were reportedly about a hundred meters apart on Tuesday. In the meantime, shipping has been stopped at this point.

According to the information, it is planned to first free the tanker and then the passenger cabin ship during the day. “Whether that will work is still uncertain,” said a police spokesman. First, the passengers of the excursion ship would be taken off board on Tuesday. This was confirmed by a spokeswoman for the responsible water and shipping authority in Karlsruhe. Why the 90 or so people should not be taken off board until Tuesday, although they have been stuck since Monday night, initially remained unclear.

The ship should be towed free on Monday, but this was not possible because of the low water level, as the water police announced in the evening. The action was canceled at nightfall and should continue on Tuesday. Most recently, on October 17th, a tanker got stuck on Hagenbacher Grund in the Germersheim district. Hagenbach is located in the southern Palatinate near the state border with Baden-Württemberg. dpa
