Max Verstappen once again led the second practice session of the Canadian GP, beating the Ferraris. Leclerc was 0.081s behind the Dutchman, with Sainz third at 0.225s and signaling an increase in porpoising compared to FP1.
With the threat of rain in the second part of the session (which ultimately didn’t come during the session), the teams rushed through their fast lap simulations in the first half, and little changed in the table in the last half hour.
Given the ‘absence’ of a Sergio Pérez who after those hourly attacks was only eleventh, the middle zone gained prominence, and Vettel put Aston Martin fourth, ahead of Fernando Alonso’s Alpine, both less than half a second behind the first. Behind them, three other different teams represented in the top 10, with Gasly sixth (AlphaTauri), Russell seventh (Mercedes) and Norris eighth (McLaren F1).
Although the presence of the Mexican is expected in the first two rows on Saturday, Alpine and Aston Martin seem comfortable, and after Ricciardo (ninth with the other McLaren), Esteban Ocon ended up closing the top 10.
Half a second behind his partner, and 13th, was a Lewis Hamilton with a Mercedes full of experiments to try to better cope with that rebound effect that generates so many headaches.
It was a session with many messages from the race management for possible unsafe release ( Magnussen ), for driving ‘unnecessarily slow’ ( Vettel and Sainz ) and for incorrectly managing the return to the track after skipping a chicane ( Gasly, Vettel and Alonso ). .
For his part, Valtteri Bottas could only do three laps due to a problem in his Alfa Romeo and the Finn spent almost the entire hour of practice in the box.
The next opportunity to see the cars, on Saturday afternoon before qualifying.

F1 Canadian GP 2022 FP2 Recap
As soon as the session started, many drivers took to the track, and in fact a moment of tension was created when Magnussen and Vettel were about to touch each other in the pit lane.
Max Verstappen, with means, was placed in front with his first lap, already feeling four tenths faster than the time with which he had led FP1. Between them and the next driver with the yellow Pirelli, Carlos Sainz, Charles Leclerc and Fernando Alonso had sneaked in with soft.
In fact, the Asturian, on his fifth lap with that red tire compound, placed second, before Verstappen improved on his seventh lap to leave him almost six tenths behind. While Sainz complained about porpoising , Hamilton completed his first timed lap, which left him sixth behind the Ferraris, the Red Bulls and Alonso.
Sainz stepped up to take second, albeit still four tenths behind Verstappen. Vettel went wide at Turn 1 and had to make use of asphalt run-offs, when Leclerc on softs dropped to 1m14.830s to take second, almost three tenths off the lead.
Finally with a good lap, Vettel was fifth, with Stroll sixth, when the session was interrupted with a Virtual Safety Car due to a soda can that had fallen on the track and had to be removed by a marshal.
There were 34 minutes left when Verstappen switched to the softs and, on that faster tire, dropped to 1m14.127s. On the weather radars, the teams saw the rain coming, which sped up the programs. Also on soft and almost instantly, Pérez was fifth, one second behind his teammate.
Russell was placed third, eight tenths away, and Leclerc brushed the lead, just 81 thousandths behind Verstappen. Sainz was 0.225s behind the champion, in third place, while race management announced that the Madrid native and Vettel would be investigated for “unnecessarily slow driving”.
Norris moved up to fifth, but was quickly overtaken by Vettel and Alonso, who were fourth and fifth ahead of Russell and Norris himself. Replays showed the Briton saving a spin in his McLaren, and Sainz aggressively slicing through the curb at Turn 13.
With 22 minutes remaining, Verstappen went out again, although with mediums and to do long runs testing race pace. The rest of the riders who appeared behind him did the same, and the table would not change until the end.
The rain didn’t come before the checkered flag and in that last half hour we saw a lot of traffic on track between all the race simulations.
