The strange day on Friday at Silverstone did not make it clear what the order of the grid would be a priori for the rest of the weekend, after a first session in the rain and a second with surprises in the table.
Hardly having been able to ride in FP1 made everyone arrive at FP2 unprepared, and there were those who adapted better and who paid more dearly. Verstappen did not set a timed lap in the first practice (like Fernando Alonso, Sergio Pérez and seven other drivers), and in the second he finished fourth, more than two tenths behind the leader.
And it is that, in addition to Carlos Sainz Jr., they also finished ahead of the Dutchman Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris.
Verstappen explained the difficulty of arriving in the afternoon with almost no mileage on the car, but was calm for the rest of the weekend.
“It’s always a bit difficult after not driving in FP1. Then FP2 becomes a bit of a guessing game, let’s put it that way, as we’re missing the foundation that we normally build in the first session.
“Maybe it wasn’t ideal, but it wasn’t a big deal either. I think we know what we have to work on and that’s what we’re going to try to do overnight, but tomorrow it will probably rain again and there will be different conditions. But ok It’s fine,” he commented.
Delving deeper into having an FP1 like the one we suffered this Friday, Max Verstappen said that this time it was a cross for them, but he doesn’t think it was a drama either: “It depends, it’s a bit hit or miss. Sometimes it works out for you , and other times not so much. This time probably for us it wasn’t amazing, but it wasn’t really bad either. We’re still there and still some things to look at, also tire wise.”
Precisely the tires were the next topic on which the champion commented, who celebrated the experience achieved in FP2 with the faster compound: “We did a few laps with the softer compound, which I think is fine. Here, with all the curves At high speed, tires in general wear out a lot, so we knew it would be quite difficult to manage tyres.”
Finally, they asked him about the team that has started in front, Ferrari, which in turn is the great rival of those in energy drinks. The #33 did not elaborate much and was direct when asked if Sainz and Charles Leclerc’s car seemed fast: “They always seem fast, every weekend they are fast, so it’s not another surprise.”
