Despite the apparent problems suffered in the three free practice sessions, Max Verstappen showed from the beginning of qualifying that he was there, and took his fourth pole position of the season, the second in the two years that modern F1 has been in Zandvoort.
The local hero made it through Q1 and Q2 on just one set of fresh tyres, and already on the first lap of Q3 he stopped the clock in a 1m10.515s which was the best time of the weekend. Leclerc exceeded that mark by 59 thousandths (0.059s), but there was still one last attempt left that ended up being a heart attack.
Charles Leclerc, without improving in the second sector, lowered his mark even more, but Max Verstappen surpassed him by just 21 thousandths (0.021s). Carlos Sainz, who had kept up the pace for most of the lap, crossed the finish line in third position, less than a tenth behind Red Bull (0.092s).
The Mercedes had also been very fast in the first sector, but neither George Russell nor Lewis Hamilton managed to sneak into the first places as they were affected by a yellow flag caused by Sergio Pérez with a spin in the last corner in his final attempt. The Mexican, in fact, will start among the silver arrows, behind Hamilton but ahead of Russell.
Fernando Alonso went through Q3 without problems and on his first attempt he appeared among the top positions. However, in Q2 he could not improve enough on the last lap and was eliminated, complaining on the radio that Sergio Pérez had bothered him.
Among the top ten there will be up to seven teams represented, since while their teammates fell in the previous two rounds, Lando Norris, Yuki Tsunoda, Mick Schumacher and Lance Stroll accompanied Red Bull Racing, Ferrari and Mercedes.
The negative note of the classification was part of the Dutch fans, who threw a flare on the track forcing Q2 to be stopped with a red flag and another one and they were about to stop the end of Q3 as well and leave us without the emotion of the fight for pole.

Dutch Qualifying Q1 Recap and Drivers Eliminated
As soon as the green traffic light came on for Q1, the teams at risk of KO, the Haas F1 Team, the Alfa Romeo, the Williams and the AlphaTauri, took to the track. When they all completed a lap, Zhou took the lead. The next to join them would be the Astn Martin, before almost everyone else began to appear on the asphalt.
Lance Stroll beat Vettel by thousandths to take the momentary first place, something that Ricciardo would also do. But Verstappen lowered the mark to 1:11.317 to get more than a second to his teammate Pérez and almost eight tenths to Leclerc. Sainz, better than the Monegasque, could only be 0.450s behind the champion, who after alleged problems in free practice presented his candidacy for pole.
The Mercedes stayed two and a half tenths behind Max, ahead of the Ferraris. Alonso also overtook Sainz, with a great lap that left him fourth, 0.350 behind the leader. In the last six minutes, Pérez, who was 15th, made his second attempt with used tires to get a good position, as did Leclerc, who stayed one tenth behind Verstappen.
With the last attempt remaining, Vettel, Ricciardo, Latifi and the Haas were in eliminated positions, and the track improved so much that except for Leclerc and Verstappen everyone else left. Vettel set the record for his first sector, but found dust in the last corner and ended up going off track, being eliminated. Along with him fell Valtteri Bottas, Kevin Magnussen, Daniel Ricciardo and Nicholas Latifi.

Dutch Qualifying Q2 Recap & Eliminated Drivers
Q2 was red-flagged just a minute after the start, when Dutch fans threw a flare onto the track. Only Albon had come out, and he had to go back to the box. Fortunately the smoke soon cleared, but the session was not resumed until five minutes later.
In addition to the flare, Albon, as Russell had done in Q1, warned that there were pigeons in the middle of the line, and a marshal came out to try to shoo them away. The second round started with no problems, and Verstappen took first place despite riding used tires, leaving Pérez at 0.387s.
Also with used cars, the Ferraris were far away, and Hamilton, with new ones, was 0.148s behind Verstappen. In the closing minutes, Gasly, Ocon, Zhou, Tsunoda and Mick Schumacher were in elimination positions, with everyone but Verstappen and Hamilton, who were the top three, going out for one last try.
With that last attack, Sainz took the lead with a 1:10.814, but Russell was 0.010s behind the man from Madrid. The last moments were frantic, and while Mick Schumacher managed to get the Haas into Q3, the two Alpines fell after Alonso complained that Checo Pérez had bothered him.
The eliminated were Pierre Gasly (11th), Esteban Ocon (12th), Fernando Alonso (13th), Guanyu Zhou (14th) and Alexander Albon (15th).
