Vettel responds to politicians who called him a hypocrite

Sebastian Vettel, Aston Martin driver and four-time Formula 1 world champion, is one of the most prominent figures in activism within the category. It is not strange to see the German with helmets or other types of protest clothing and exposing his way of thinking on issues of human rights, climate change or regarding the LGTBIQ + community.

On this occasion, the veteran driver has spoken publicly during the Canadian GP weekend, with a message on his shirt at the beginning of the week highlighting the environmental impact of tar sands extraction in Canada, which also would later wear on his helmet.

Some Canadian politicians, such as the Minister of Energy for the province of Alberta, Sonya Savage , responded to his message on social networks, branding Vettel a “hypocrite” for talking about the environment while racing in F1.

Savage set his sights on the Aston Martin team’s main sponsor, which is Aramco, a Saudi oil company that he claims is one of the world’s biggest polluters.

The German agreed with the minister and admitted that he was being hypocritical, but added that the most important thing was not the character who presented him, but the message itself, which was to protect the environment.

“I’m a bit disappointed that the politicians have reacted personally, when it’s not about me at all, but about the big picture,” Vettel explained of the reactions his actions provoked. “Yes, I am a hypocrite for having this job or doing what I love. We all have passions and this is mine.”

“But there are solutions for the future, for racing to be more sustainable and not dependent on fossil fuels, and from that point of view the future looks exciting.”

“But I find it disappointing that they react to this issue with personal attacks rather than focusing on the big picture. In fact, the message should be that we should avoid reliance on fossil fuels and use renewable energy sources instead.” concluded the four-time world champion.
