Video: absurd accident between Stroll and Lafiti in qualifying

It could well be applied that hunger and the desire to eat came together. There were two minutes left in Q1 qualifying for the 2022 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix when cameras showed Nicholas Latifi in an accident followed by Lance Stroll.

A red flag period was quickly established that stopped the session, and the repetitions arrived that left more doubts than certainties. After an accident in FP3 and after the team had worked against the clock to get him out on the track, Stroll left the pit lane and joined the track.

At that moment, passing by him, along the normal line of the Albert Park circuit, was a Latifi that was preparing for a lap, and that in fact let the Aston Martin pass, apparently to gain space for a final turn that allowed him to qualify for Q2 (he was in 18th place). However, the Williams player then decided to change his mind and pass his compatriot, who turned right as they overtook him and crashed into Latifi.

The debate quickly arose on social networks, between those who blamed Latifi for having first let Stroll pass and then accelerated and those who blamed Stroll, considering that he should have seen in his mirrors that a driver was coming from his right.

Both blamed the other in their first statements on their team radios. The Aston Martin AMR22’s front suspension was shattered, but overall the consequences for Stroll were minor. And it is that Latifi, after the touch, ended up hitting the wall with force, causing immense damage to the Williams FW44.

Be that as it may, the two Canadians have already been the protagonists of numerous accidents and incidents since they debuted in F1, one in 2017 (Stroll) and another in 2020 (Latifi).

And for you, who was the protagonist, the biggest culprit in the accident in qualifying between Latifi and Stroll in Australia?

With two minutes and one second (02:01) on the clock to the end of Q2, the session was stopped for almost a quarter of an hour, which allowed Aston Martin to fix Sebastian Vettel’s car in time (also injured in FP3) and take the German driver out on the track.

However, a traffic jam had formed at the end of the pitlane and the four-time champion had to overtake several cars on the preparation lap. Despite this effort, and with a slow car, Vettel was eliminated, winning, yes, position to the two protagonists of the incident in this article.
