Fernando Alonso went down in history at the 2022 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix after tying Kimi Raikkonen as the driver with the most races played in the highest category of motorsport, and he wanted to celebrate it with his 11th consecutive appointment within the area of points. To do this, taking advantage of the penalties of various drivers on the grid, the Spaniard started from sixth place, and stayed there until the fastest began to come back.
The one from Alpine took the exit calmly with the medium tire, avoiding any touch in the Rettifilio variant, but got stuck in a train of single-seaters with Daniel Ricciardo’s DRS, and the Australian from McLaren was quite a wall in the early stages. This caused him to try to lengthen his first stint, but his plans changed on lap 32 , when he abandoned the test at Monza.
When everyone thought that the two-time world champion would make his first stop in the pitlane to go for a set of fresh softs and continue fighting for a possible sixth position, his car said enough and he was forced to stop in the pitlane.
“We have a problem so we have to retire. Box on this lap, box on this lap,” his engineer said over the radio a few seconds before the Spaniard ended his test in Italy.
The team has not yet made any statement in this regard nor has it reported what the real cause of the mishap was, so the pilot’s fans will have to wait to find out what has happened.
He was not the only one who had to abandon the test before completing the 53 laps, as both Aston Martins had reliability problems. In the case of Sebastian Vettel, he caused a virtual safety car after stopping in the middle of the track, while his teammate, Lance Stroll, did the same as Alonso and ended his race in the pits.
