The 2022 Formula 1 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix started in the worst possible way for the two Spanish drivers. On a wet circuit, Carlos Sainz was the victim of a contact with Daniel Ricciardo on arrival at the first corner, and from behind the grid was compacted and everyone tried to avoid that incident.
Valtteri Bottas did not succeed, who touched the McLaren, and neither did a Mick Schumacher who spun and, with his rear tires, touched the side of Alonso’s car.
The Asturian, who started ninth, had lost position with a great George Russell, but gained two places with Sainz’s abandonment and Ricciardo’s touch. However, his Alpine was damaged and although he stayed on track during the safety car period, after the restart he was unable to do anything.

When racing resumed on lap 5, he was passed by both Sebastian Vettel, Yuki Tsunoda, and Lance Stroll, and then the right sidepod of his A522 definitely came off when he was passed by Lewis Hamilton on lap 6.
His team asked him to return to the garage, and although Fernando Alonso asked how serious the damage was, in case he could continue, they quickly told him that he had to leave.
This is the second retirement of the #14 in the first four races of the 2022 season, and the third round of which it has left empty, accumulating so far only the 2 points of the Bahrain GP after a very unlucky start to the season.
It is also officially Alonso’s 71st Formula 1 grand prix, his fourth since returning to the top flight last year with Alpine.
