After seeing the asphalt conditions of the new Miami circuit, the chances of seeing an accident on the first lap of the grand prix were quite great. The drivers respected each other a lot and nothing serious happened, although Fernando Alonso did not escape a scare.
After a start that once again recalled that almost extraterrestrial version that the Spanish driver has in the first meters of a Formula 1 race, climbing several positions and overtaking two drivers, the Spaniard met Lewis Hamilton at turn 2 and both single-seaters collided, although luckily for both, not very aggressively.
Starting from 11th after a bittersweet qualifying (tenth really when you consider that Lance Stroll was starting from the pitlane due to a fuel problem that prevented him from standing still), Alonso and Hamilton found themselves battling for seventh place in the second corner of the Miami Grand Prix, but a touch between the right front of the Alpine and the left rear of the Mercedes nearly ended both drivers’ races early.
After the incident, the Spanish driver managed to get behind the Mercedes driver, who complained on the radio about some problems in the area where he had been hit. A few meters later, Alonso managed to overtake cleanly and placed seventh.
However, a few laps later, the Asturian made a mistake and lost the place again with the British Mercedes, falling to eighth position and watching from a distance as Lewis Hamilton overtook Pierre Gasly and escaped little by little, getting stuck behind the French AlphaTauri pilot.
