Video: double fall of Márquez, who led the race in France

Marc Márquez returned to lead a race more than a year later, since that terrible 2020 Spanish GP where he was injured and his ordeal began.

Faced with increasingly intense rainfall at the Le Mans Bugatti circuit, at the end of lap 3 the marshals waved the rain flags (white with a red cross) and, at the start of lap 4, the white flag, which gave freedom to riders to change bikes.

At that time Márquez was sixth, just behind Takaaki Nakagami, but he passed the Japanese and then Maverick Viñales to move up to fourth and close in on Rins, Miller and Quartararo . On lap 5 he overtook Suzuki, and then took advantage of Miller going wide to take second.

The race became flag to flag , for the first time since August 2017.

At the entrance to the pitlane, Márquez overtook Quartararo, pushing the speed limiter, and with a slow bike change by Yamaha, he rejoined the track first. There were 22 laps left and he was second and a half to ‘Diablo’, with a very wide margin over third.

Miller was getting closer to Quartararo, but Márquez separated up to two seconds from the Frenchman. However, on lap 8, at turn 14, the multi-champion went down, in the first crash of a right-hand corner (the side of the injured shoulder) since his return.

Such was the advantage they had over the positions outside the podium (14 seconds from Miller to fourth), that Marc got up and returned to the track, in the points zone, and from there his comeback began.

However, on lap 18, and when he was already eleventh, Márquez crashed again, having to retire.
