The newly crowned two-time champion was inching closer to his rival after the pit stop, and with just a few laps to go, the Dutchman took advantage of the DRS to overtake the Englishman on the Austin backstretch. However, Verstappen’s great pace made Hamilton’s efforts to get closer to him useless, and a tire lock with two laps to go was what buried the Mercedes’ options, since he went more than a second behind.
In this way, the Red Bull driver achieved his 33rd victory in Formula 1, breaking ties with Fernando Alonso on the all-time list and equaling the two Germans who won the most victories in a single season at the Great Circus.
