A massive 150-pound leatherback turtle has returned safely to the ocean in Provincetown, Massachusetts, after a group of volunteers helped free it from a marsh in which it was trapped. The turtle, estimated to be about 1.5 meters long, was released from the Herring River by three groups of volunteers, according to a tweet from the New England Aquarium.
The turtle was tagged with identification trackers that will allow researchers to track its health progress over the next month. A separate acoustic tag will allow experts to track your migration pattern for years.
Although it has happened on other occasions, the fact that these huge leatherback turtles have been trapped without the possibility of returning to the ocean alone, not all have managed to have a happy ending.
Last October, a male leatherback turtle, believed to be between 30 and 50 years old , was found dead on an Australian beach, having been captured by shark nets before dying.
