Washington's birthday celebration

Most people could probably never guess where George Washington’s biggest birthday celebration takes place. Believe it or not, it takes place every year in the border city of Laredo, Texas. It is true that Laredo is not the first thing that comes to mind when Americans think of their first president. Yet it is Laredo who launches Washington’s oldest and largest birthday celebration.

Founded in 1898, this month-long celebration attracts more than 400,000 visitors each year. Over the years, the event has grown to include a variety of entertainment and activities. This year’s celebration will include parades, concerts, fireworks, a carnival, a fun run, a barbecue grill and more. In short, there really is something for everyone at this “international celebration of a traditionally American holiday.”

The 2017 Washington Birthday Celebration will begin on January 17 with the Commander’s Reception and will conclude on February 19 with the HEB Fireworks Extravaganza show. Some of the highlights include: American Historical Theater George Washington Performance (February 8), Comedy Jam for George (February 10), Funking Fathers’ 5K Fun Run & Health Fair (February 11), LCC Family Fun Fest and Musicale (Feb.11), Princess Pocahontas Pageant and Ball (Feb.11), WBCA Stars and Stripes Air Show Spectacular (Feb.

12), Jalapeno Festival (February 17), The Society of Martha Washington Colonial Pageant & Ball (February 17) and Anheuser-Busch Washington’s Birthday Parade (February 18).

In addition to the events listed above, there is an ongoing carnival during Washington’s birthday celebration, as well as a number of other events that take place each weekend.

From start to finish, Laredo’s birthday celebration in Washington is packed with family entertainment. Since the celebration lasts for an entire month, there is plenty of time to schedule a visit to Laredo and participate in the festivities. And while it may seem strange that George Washington’s largest celebration is held along the Texas-Mexico border, visitors to this month-long annual celebration can attest that it is a one-of-a-kind event worth visiting. . .
