Video games can let you do everything from controlling a theme park to a rail company, but this new resource management simulator features a very different kind of business.
It’s rare for video games to refer to drugs in general, but here we have a deeper version of this world.
The main story mode of Weedcraft Inc. it puts you in the shoes of a failed student, who goes quite deep into the practice of cannabis use for legitimate medical reasons. It also addresses the different effects that trade has on rich and poor communities, raising issues such as gentrification and chance, from an ordinary person’s point of view, the distribution of places where use is and is not. legal.
In terms of the gameplay, as well as the narrative, Weedcraft is a business simulator and as far as the former is concerned, it is surprisingly realistic. Your first task is to simply grow the plants yourself, which involves experimenting in the basement to see which strains and growing techniques work best. The game puts a lot of emphasis on this element, but as you will see, much of it is based only on trial and error, and you will be happy when you can share the responsibilities with someone else.
But not only do you have to grow the cannabis, you also have to sell it and deal with the different characters who want you to stop , including the police, rival vendors, and your family. Very soon, however, you will have the luxury of starting to hire other people, grow the plants, sell them on the street …
Then the reach increases again when you need to expand your business. The game attempts to make these employees look like real people, each with individual statistics that determine their competence and reliability. But it doesn’t go into enough detail and all the potential stories of honor and betrayal boil down to asking for a raise every five minutes and complaining about rival gangs.
As a business simulator, Weedcraft Inc. is not very complex, but in terms of gameplay there is fun, it is very entertaining . As the empire expands, you find that, like many businesses, your main concern is property management, as you closely monitor mundane management overheads such as rent, utility bills and labor. At the same time, your clientele will go from random people on the street to celebrities and politicians.
Visually, the game is quite minimal, despite the fact that there are views of the city with small vehicles and pedestrians wandering around. Among other things, there are no voiceovers .
There is a second game mode where you act like a 50 year old man who just got out of jail.
When it comes to interacting with other characters, Weedcraft Inc. reproduces things very broadly, with little cartoon portraits of various drug-related stereotypes, from junkies to hipsters and, quite disgustingly, cancer patients, which are portrayed with sunken eyes and connected with an intravenous drip. The game is clearly trying to be irreverent, comical, funny, but the script is not clever enough to make it seem like a champion of such characteristics. It’s a shame because through the game, Weedcraft we know some interesting points about the socio-economic influence of the drug trade, which is its strong point.
Be that as it may, we can still say that it is a fairly competent business simulator.
