For some years now, the holiday of All Saints’ Day in Spain has become a party for young and old. After a year where all social gatherings and street gatherings were banned due to the pandemic, this Halloween 2021 promises to be much more terrifying, with meetings much more similar to those before the coronavirus pandemic.
All Saints’ Day is celebrated every November 1 , therefore, on the night of October 31, there are many parties and concentrations of children and adults to demand ‘trick or treating’ at the doors of the houses.
When is Halloween 2021 celebrated?
As every year, the night of the dead is celebrated at dawn from October 31 to November 1. This year, October 31 falls on a Sunday, so that night, from Sunday to Monday , will be the most terrifying of the year.
The next day, it will be the turn to visit the deceased relatives in the cemeteries and honor their memory with religious acts or by going to the cemeteries to deposit flowers and other gifts for the dead.
Traditionally, Halloween had never been celebrated in Spain, since it is an Anglo-Saxon holiday that little by little has spread to many countries that kept other traditions for this early morning from October 31 to November 1.
November 1 is a national holiday, so it is used to be with the family and remember the relatives who are no longer there.
How did the Halloween party come about?
It is a party that is greatly influenced by film and television. Although we can think that the festival arose in the United States, the truth is that it was of Celtic origin, in Ireland. With the end of the harvest season, the Celtic year began, which coincided directly with the autumn solstice.
In the ancient conceptions of this culture, they believed that that night the line that separated the earthly with the world of the dead was opened, so that the mortals and the dead lived together for a few hours.
To drive away evil spirits, masks were used and banquets were held at the graves of the dead, to create a kind of family reunion with the ancestors.
It was from the second half of the nineteenth century, in 1840, when there was a huge immigration of Irish inhabitants to the United States , when the popularity of the party grew and with this, the very folklore that surrounds the celebration.
As if that were not enough, this year at dawn from October 31 to November 1 we will have to make the fall time change, so at 3 am it will be 2 am.
