The common element is cadaverine , also known as 1,5-pentanediamine, whose chemical formula C 5 H 14 N 2 . It is a smelly and volatile molecule formed by the decarboxylation of the amino acid lysine by certain bacteria. It is found mainly in dead organic matter, and is partly responsible for the strong smell of putrefaction. But it has also been shown to be partially responsible for the foul odor of halitosis or bad breath , a problem that affects more than half of the population at some point in life.
What do bad breath and the smell of a corpse have in common?
Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2022 to the developers of a tool to build molecules
Scientists Carolyn Bertozzi, Morten Meldal and Karl Barry Sharpless have been honored with this prestigious award.
Can life exist based on silicon?
They said in the science fiction movie Star Trek that we are units of carbon. But is it possible that there is another chemical element capable of substituting it? What is the framework of the molecules of life?
Nitric oxide: a molecule with a thousand faces
Until the end of the 20th century, nitric oxide was only of interest as an environmental pollutant, becoming the molecule of the year for its fundamental biological value.
They discover a mineral that can 'remember' like a human
No other material that we know of behaves in this way. Could this component have a brain?
