Estrogen is essential for the development of sexual functions and characteristics in women during adolescence, which includes menstruation and the reproductive cycle. In addition, it helps both functions to be maintained throughout life. And it is precisely this role that has made it so popular along with progesterone. But they are not the only functions it performs.
They are produced by the ovaries, adrenal glands, and fatty tissues (fat cells). However, it is in the ovaries where a greater amount is produced.
There are different types of estrogens, which we can classify as follows:
- Estradiol It is produced by both men and women, although it is characterized as the most common type of estrogen during the reproductive years.
- Estrona. We find it present after menopause.
- Estriol. Its levels increase during pregnancy. Helps the uterus grow, and prepares the body for childbirth. Just before the baby is born it reaches its peak.
What are the functions of estrogens?
Estrogens help develop and maintain both a woman’s reproductive system and her various female characteristics. But they also contribute to the proper maintenance of bone health, cognitive health, the function of the body system and other essential body processes.
Estrogen helps stimulate the growth of the ovule follicle by regulating the menstrual cycle , maintains the thickness of the vaginal wall while promoting adequate lubrication, improves and maintains the mucous membrane that lines the uterus, regulates flow and blood flow. thickness of uterine mucus secretions, and also stops the flow of milk after weaning (when breastfeeding has ended).
In early puberty, estrogen is actively involved in the development of female secondary sexual characteristics, such as underarm and pubic hair, broader breasts, and hips.
