Pregorexia is an eating disorder characterized by arising during pregnancy. This causes women to suffer a constant fear of gaining weight and the food they eat. Research carried out in the United Kingdom states that around 7.6% of pregnant women have eating problems , while 23.4% are concerned about their figure and weight.
Symptoms to detect pregorexia
Fulvia Mancini, gynecologist in charge of the Clínicas Eva de Cataluña center, comments that these women exercise excessively, consume very few calories and may even induce vomiting. In addition, an alarming fact: they do not talk about their gestation process.
Therefore, the most visible and common symptoms of these patients are the following:
– Rejection of her pregnancy and her body
– Performing excessive exercise
– Obsession with weight and food
– Reduction of calorie intake
– Weight below normal during pregnancy
– Denial of a possible problem
It is advisable that, if the woman has previously suffered from an eating disorder , such as bulimia or anorexia, and wants to become pregnant, she contacts her trusted doctor to discuss this issue. Pregorexia can arise in women with previous problems, but also in those who have not had any medical history with this condition.
Some of the consequences that this disorder can lead to are: anemia, malnutrition, hair loss, lack of calcium , malformations in the fetus, decreased amniotic fluid, intrauterine growth retardation and even fetal death.
Normal weight during pregnancy
Weight gain is common during pregnancy. In fact, it is considered normal for the woman to gain approximately between 13 and 18 kg , varying depending on the number of babies that she houses and the weight that the patient had before starting this process.
If what really worries us is to recover the figure after giving birth, it is convenient to practice physical exercise on a regular basis, such as yoga, Pilates or hypopressive abdominals ; combining it with a healthy diet, rich in protein foods and vitamins. Today’s baby’s health should not be compromised by tomorrow’s cosmetic concerns.
