Caused for different reasons, from a strong emotion to staying in places with a charged environment, hot flashes manifest as a sudden sensation of heat that spreads through the head, neck and extremities, and is generally accompanied by sweating and redness of the skin.
Until recently, hot flashes were the official symptom of menstrual withdrawal, affecting 80 percent of postmenopausal women. Although its origin is unknown, everything indicates that it is a hormonal imbalance due either to an excess of pituitary gonadotropins -LH and FSH-, or to a lack of estrogens.
Men, especially those surgically neutered, are also not free from hot flashes. In men, these are related to a rapid drop in testosterone and estrogens.
