The oldest zoo in the world is the Tiergarten Schöbrunn in Vienna (Austria). It was inaugurated in 1752 by order of the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I of Habsburg (1503-1564), also Infant of Spain, Archduke of Austria and King of Hungary and Bohemia.
This zoo was originally a royal menagerie, and has been open since 1779 . It is located on the grounds of the Schöbrunn Palace and the residence and its gardens, including this old zoo, have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.
Regarding the first zoo that we have evidence, in 2009, archaeological findings suggested the existence of a large menagerie in Hierakonpolis , a city in ancient Egypt. It would have had more than 100 creatures, including elephants, wild cats, baboons or hippos.
