The Spanish fly or oil beetle, Lytta vesicatoria , is a coleopteran insect from which an aphrodisiac with the same name is extracted. Medieval alchemists, who used to obtain the erotic potion by macerating the dried corpses of this insect, prescribed it to interested couples as well as to cattle breeders.
Taken orally, the Spanish fly causes irritation of the urethra and, poorly dosed, it becomes lethal.
