What is the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S FPS Boost, how to activate it and what games are compatible

The FPS Boost, or increase in FPS in Spanish, is a feature of Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S introduced since February 2021 in more and more backward compatible titles. In essence, the FPS Boost consists of improving the performance through the hardware , doubling or quadrupling the frame rate, achieving a much more fluid gaming experience.

In this way, titles like Star Wars: Battlefront II or Titanfall will benefit from the FPS Boost taking full advantage of 120hz televisions and monitors. On the other hand, games like Skyrim or Fallout 4 will now play at 60hz, which is a huge improvement.

How to enable or disable FPS Boost on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S

As we discussed, the FPS Boost works through the hardware of Microsoft’s Next Generation consoles, so it does not require an update or additional work by the developers. And although the process is usually automatic, it is not activated by default in all games.

The reason? In very specific games, such as Battlefield 1 or Fallout 76, in order to enable the FPS Boost technology, it has been chosen to reduce the resolution of a game to guarantee the quality of the gaming experience. In any case, in these games it can be easily activated from the Manage games and add-ons options.

• The easiest way to activate the FPS Boost in these cases is through the vertical menu that is displayed when you press the Xbox button on the controller . Logically, we will have to have the latest console update installed.

• Once the vertical menu is displayed, we position ourselves on the game that we want to activate the FPS Boost and press the Menu button (to the right of the Xbox button with three horizontal lines) and we will see a new window unfold.
• In that pop-up window we select Manage games and add-ons and we will enter the game data, the installed version, the saved data and, most importantly in our case: the Compatibility Options.

• From there we can manually enable or disable both HDR and FPS Boost ( the FPS Increase ) of the game. Once the process is complete, we can restart the game normally and enjoy the experience.

What if my TV or monitor does not offer 120Hz?

In order to enjoy the increase in frames of the FPS Boost we will need to have a television or a monitor capable of offering the 120 Hz or 60 Hz that compatible games can now offer. And the same goes for next-gen games that achieve that performance.

With that in mind, our Xbox Series X or our Xbox Series S communicates with the screen that we use through the HDMI cable, so that they will accommodate their possibilities and resolutions.

In this way, if the screen we use is not prepared for it, as is the case with HDR technology, our console will not only not offer the performance improvement, but -logically- we will not be able to activate it manually either.

What games are compatible with FPS Boost?

The first batch of games compatible with FPS Boost arrived in February 2021 and, on a regular basis, the number has been growing.

At the time of this writing there are 23 games that have received this improvement , almost all included in the Xbox Game Pass and more than half belonging to Electronic Arts or Bethesda. And the number is expected to continue to grow over the next few months.
