When can you overtake in pohibido?

In highway driving, overtaking is one of the most dangerous maneuvers to do. We must be immensely safe before carrying out an overtaking that could cost us an accident, therefore, with a vision for this summer, where accidents have returned to numbers before the pandemic, the General Directorate of Traffic recalls what the regulations say to overtaking on any kind of road.

As stated in the regulations, there are only three cases in which we can overtake on the left, since the obligation is to always do so on the left. These assumptions are :

-When the driver in front of us intends to stop, stop or turn left.

-In cities where there is two-way streetcar circulation, and there is a central track for the tram, in this case it will be possible to overtake on the right.

-When there is more than one lane in the direction of traffic, on urban roads, and these are delimited. In this case too, exceptionally, it will be possible to overtake on the right.

These are the only three cases in which the DGT reports that we can overtake, which is generally prohibited.

Overtaking for flow reasons

There are other assumptions that are related to the flow of the traffic itself and that, in exceptional situations, may be subject to generally prohibited overtaking. As a general rule, it is strictly forbidden to overtake in unsafe situations such as curves, changes in grade and places with poor visibility.

However, to contribute to the fluidity of traffic, there are 7 rules that, exceptionally , allow us to overtake even if it is prohibited, always maintaining the safety of ourselves and the rest of the users in circulation.

Roundabouts: we must consider the driving circumstances and that the conditions of the roundabout itself do not pose any risk to users.

Tunnels: when there are two or more lanes in the same direction, since the opposite direction is not occupied.

Cyclists: if we circulate in the prohibited overtaking section, the cyclist can be passed occupying the opposite lane, as long as there is a lateral separation of 1.5 meters and not putting the cyclist or the vehicles that circulate in the opposite direction at risk .

Immobilized vehicles: the overtaking of a vehicle in double rows and that obstructs traffic is approved.

Intersections: it is possible to overtake when the road on which the maneuver is carried out has right of way.

Level crossings: overtaking is allowed when carried out by two-wheeled vehicles that do not impede visibility.

Slower vehicles: in prohibited overtaking areas, you can overtake slow vehicles such as cyclists, mopeds, animal-drawn vehicles, animals or pedestrians, as long as it does not pose a risk to users in traffic.
