Where is a holiday next Monday, August 16?

Tomorrow Sunday the Assumption of the Virgin is celebrated and although in a previous post we have already informed you of how August 15 is a national holiday in Spain , it seems that some autonomous communities have decided to “move” that day holiday already which coincides with being the weekend. Let’s see then what they are and where is a holiday next Monday, August 16.

Where is a holiday this coming Monday, August 16?

It is not that the autonomous communities that have decided to celebrate next Monday, have chosen to change the celebration of the Assumption of the Virgin just because or because they wanted to. The working calendar that we have established in Spain contemplates several national holidays (in addition to regional and local ones) and although these must be celebrated throughout Spain equally, there is the possibility that those that are substitutable remain on the common date without further ado or is changed for another holiday. A decision that rests with the governments of each autonomous community and that this year has already happened on two other occasions, in addition to August 16: on March 19, the celebration of San José, and on April 1, Holy Thursday.

In this way and given that the government establishes that it is completely allowed to celebrate on Monday, August 16, some communities have decided to move the holiday to the celebration of the Assumption of the Virgin. Specifically, they are: Andalusia, Aragón, Asturias, the Canary Islands and Castilla y León which have a holiday marked on Monday, August 16, while all the others will keep August 15 as a holiday and on Monday they will have a working day.

Local holidays on August 16

The communities that we have mentioned are those that have decided to move the daytime holiday, but many municipalities and localities now celebrate their patron saint festivities coinciding with the Assumption of the Virgin, so they are also going to celebrate this Monday, August 16. This is the case, for example, of municipalities in Madrid, such as Becerril de la Sierra, Berzosa de Lozoya, Buitrago de Lozoya, Cenicientos, Pelayos de la Presa, Torrelodones, Valdeolmos-Alalpardo or Valdepiélagos, in Catalonia such as Martorell, Cubelles, Olost, Tarrés or Santa Pau, among others or also some towns in Galicia such as Arzúa, Betanzos, A Pobra do Caramiñal, Santiago de Compostela, Viveiro or Caldas de Reis.

How many national holidays are left to celebrate?

August 15 is a national holiday but since it is Sunday and also coincides with the summer holidays of many, it may go unnoticed by the vast majority of people, although we still have to celebrate other holidays marked as a national holiday in the work calendar such and as is the case of October 12 (National Holiday of Spain or Hispanic Day), November 1 (All Saints) or December 25 (Christmas).
