Which rider won the internal duel in each MotoGP team in 2021?

Equality has been the dominant note in MotoGP in the last two seasons, where up to 13 different riders have shared the last 32 races. However, it is not the same in all teams, and in most there is always one that stands out above the other.

At the end of the 2021 season, it became clear who was the strongest in each team and the internal duel was won

Monster Energy Yamaha

Fabio Quartararo won the drivers’ title with two races remaining at Misano. The Frenchman was by far the best driver this season, with five wins and a single DNF. Before Maverick Viñales was fired, the balance clearly fell on the side of the boy from Nice, who has contributed 73% of Yamaha’s points, although it was not enough for the tuning fork brand to win the brand and team championships. El Diablo also won the direct duel with the Spaniard (8-2 in qualifying and 7-3 in the race) and later with Franco Morbidelli (4-1 in both).

Repsol Honda

Although Marc Márquez missed the first two races and the last two, he was the best Honda rider in qualifying. The Catalan, in addition, was the only one who won races. As far as the official HRC team is concerned, he contributed 56% of the points compared to 40% for his teammate Pol Espargaró, who made at least one podium. In classification he beat him 9 to 5 and in the race the statistics were 10 to 3.

Suzuki Ecstar

Joan Mir consolidated himself as the leader of Suzuki after proclaiming himself the MotoGP world champion in 2020 and this year he has been the strongest again. The bad year of Álex Rins has caused the Spaniard to have contributed 67% of the points of the Hamamatsu brand. In qualifying and in the race the team from Palma won (9 to 8 and in the race 12 to 4).

Ducati Lenovo

The new pair from Borgo Panigale was one of the most balanced and both Jack Miller and Pecco Bagnaia won races this year, 2 and 4 respectively. The Italian finished runner-up in the world with 58% of Ducati’s points. He also won 12-6 in qualifying and 12-5 in the race.

Red Bull KTM

The KTM duo is another of the most compensated in MotoGP. Miguel Oliveira and Brad Binder each won a race. The South African had a better second half of the season and added 61% of the points. In the race he beat him 13-5, but in qualifying the Portuguese finished ahead 11-7.

Aprilia Gresini

Aleix Espargaró carried all the weight in Aprilia and added 88% of the points of Noale’s. Before being relieved by Viñales, Lorenzo Savadori lost in classification by 9 to 1, while in the race he only surpassed him in Barcelona after the abandonment of Granollers. Things didn’t change much with the Spaniard, and he only beat him once in the race (by abandoning the #41).

Petronas Yamaha

The best satellite team in recent years was the penultimate in MotoGP in 2021. The Valentino Rossi-Franco Morbidelli pairing did not work out, due in part to the Roman’s injury before being promoted to Monster Yamaha. Despite being out for several races, he added 41% of the points to his compatriot’s 44% and beat Tavullia’s team 6-2 in qualifying, although in the race they were tied at 4. Andrea Dovizioso’s arrival coincided with a improvement of the #46 , which took a favorable 3-2 in qualifying and 4-1 in the race.

Pramac Ducati

Johann Zarco imposed his experience in the Pramac box, although Jorge Martín did win one race, having missed four due to injury. The Frenchman contributed 60% of the points, won 9-5 in the race, but in qualifying the Spaniard was 9-5 ahead.

LCR Honda

Takaaki Nakagami and Alex Márquez did not have a great season, but between them the Japanese did slightly better. He added 52% of the LCR points and scored an outstanding 14-3 in qualifying against his teammate, but in the race it was 8-7 in favor of Cervera.

Tech 3 KTM

Except for occasional performances, Iker Lecuona and Danilo Petrucci used to appear for the last positions and on more than one occasion they had to fight each other. The Valencian only added two points more than Terni, he beat him 10 to 8 in qualifying and 8 to 7 in the race. The most compensated couple in MotoGP.

Avintia VR46

Enea Bastianini made the difference in the Avintia box and, in addition to scoring two podiums, she added 71% of the team’s points. In qualifying he lost to Luca Marini by 10 to 8, but won in the race 13 to 5.
