The black box was an idea developed by the Australian chemist David Warren , who after investigating in 1953 the accident of a Comet, the first commercial jet airplane, developed the idea of recording the voices of the pilots and the activity of the instruments in the cockpit of aircraft in a system capable of remaining safe after an accident.
Initially, the Australian Department of Civil Aviation dismissed Warren's "black box" as a useless invention. However, in 1958, after a British aeronautical official saw the device, Warren received the money necessary for its commercial manufacture. Currently, it is an indispensable piece of equipment on most airplanes.
What is a black box?
