Kirby first appeared on April 27, 1992 in the video game Kirby’s Dream Land. It’s funny, but this plump pink character is occasionally shown in yellow. You may remember seeing it this way in Super Smash Bros., or maybe Kirby Air Ride. It appears that legendary game developer Shigeru Miyamoto originally wanted Kirby to be yellow but Kirby’s creator, Masahiro Sakurai, nonetheless wanted it to be pink.
The argument between yellow and pink must have dragged on for quite some time because Nintendo of America, apparently ignorant of Kirby’s true color , chose to transform him into a white-colored creature in the box of its first game , the monochrome Kirby’s Dream Land in Game. Boy. However, by the time Kirby’s Dream Land 2 was released, it was already pink. If you think about it, a yellow Kirby would have ended up looking a bit like Pikachu.
Kirby is named after an American lawyer
During development, the team referred to the circular shape as Popopo. His name wasn’t Kirby yet. When it came time to choose a name, a group of Nintendo executives got together and chose Kirby’s name from a recruiting board. Beloved Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto said the name was chosen because it reminded them of American attorney John Kirby, who represented Nintendo in court during a dispute with Universal City Studios over Donkey Kong.
Meta Knight is a Kirby clone in disguise
Meta Knight has appeared in numerous Kirby titles over the years, sometimes to help and sometimes to get in Kirby’s way. But if we remove his mask / helmet, he appears to be a blue version of Kirby.
Comics and manga
Anime isn’t the only Japanese form of entertainment this little pink has dabbled in. Over the years, a wide variety of manga have been released in Japan; many of them tell original stories. The longest running series was Kirby of the Stars , which was a collection of 25 books.
Kirby couldn’t copy skills at first
Besides being pink and adorable, Kirby is also famous for being able to copy the abilities of the creatures he absorbs. The little man has employed more than 90 different copying skills in his two decades of existence, although to be fair, a good chunk of them come from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. But Kirby couldn’t even copy abilities in his debut title, Kirby’s Dream Land; His famous ability wasn’t introduced until Kirby’s adventure on the NES.
His home planet is called Pop Star
Kirby’s games frequently take place on his home planet, Planet Pop Star, a golden, pointed star that, according to game lore, is so far from Earth in the universe that it is completely invisible to humans. It is also located next to another planet that is orbited by arcs.
Kirby’s particular area of residence on this curious planet is a small place called Dream Land.
