Williams says goodbye to his F1 engineering director

Adam Carter had been linked to the Grove team since May 2016. He was twice the longest-serving member of the team at a race weekend, first when interim team manager Simon Roberts was sidelined by COVID-19 at the 2020 Turkish GP, and again when Jost Capito tested positive ahead of last year’s Saudi Arabian GP.

In a brief statement regarding his departure from the team, Capito said: “As we look ahead to our engineering strategy and requirements for the coming year and beyond, we have made changes to our structure.”

Adam Carter has left the team and first of all I would like to thank him for his hard work and contribution over the last six years,” he added.

Williams has undergone several personnel changes since Dorilton Capital bought the team in September 2020. Capito joined as chief executive in December and then took over as team principal when Roberts left in July 2021.

After spending his first few months at the company observing and deciding what was missing from the team, Capito hired two former VW Motorsport colleagues for key positions.

Francois-Xavier Demaison was appointed technical director in March 2021, and when Roberts left, Demaison also became chief engineer and on-track.

In November, Capito brought on Belgian Sven Smeets , another VW veteran, as sporting director.

As part of the shake-up, Doug McKiernan , who joined the team in February 2018 and held a variety of roles including lead designer, also left last season.

Carter has gained plenty of experience with a variety of teams during his two decades in the sport. He started as a junior engineer at Arrows in 1998, and after the team closed its doors, he joined McLaren as test team engineer in 2002.

Following that stint, he had a brief spell with the Jordan team in 2004 before moving to Renault as test and race engineer the same year.

Later in 2008 he joined Wirth Research as Chief Engineer and Racing Program Manager, before moving to Williams after eight years with the company.

He started in 2016 as a senior engineer and was quickly promoted through a variety of jobs, becoming Chief Vehicle Program Engineer and also Chief of Staff in 2017, Chief Engineer and Chief Designer in 2019, and Director of Engineering in 2021. .
