Wolff believes Audi and Porsche will make F1 more competitive

Audi confirmed this Friday morning before the start of the Belgian Grand Prix that it will officially enter Formula 1 in 2026 with its own power unit. The German manufacturer is about to close an agreement to acquire a large percentage of the Sauber team, which currently competes under the name of Alfa Romeo.

On the other hand, Porsche has not yet formally revealed its plan to merge with Red Bull and the new organization created to manage its own engines; Red Bull Powertrains.

Toto Wolff , Mercedes director, welcomed the two Teutonic brands that will arrive in the coming years, specifically in 2026, to the highest category of motorsport, two structures with which he recently competed in Formula E.

“It’s great,” the Austrian told Motorsport.com speaking of the Audi announcement. “I think when you look and see who has joined F1, in terms of car companies and other non-car brands, that shows the strength that the series has.

“And that’s a great thing for Formula 1, as well as for us, having some of the best car companies in the world as rivals.”

“Formula 1 is the toughest sporting competition for any car company in the world. It always has been, and it will become even more competitive with the arrival of these teams,” he added.

Wolff said he understood why Audi and Porsche have taken two different approaches to their projects.

“I think they are covering all fields, because one enters with a works team that is fully integrated in Switzerland, while the other joins one of the best teams on the grid in the world. It is a two-way strategy that makes sense. for me”.

Williams team principal Jost Capito , who previously ran the Volkswagen program in the WRC, agreed that Audi ‘s arrival at the Grand Circus demonstrates the category’s fine form.

“I think it’s very important for Formula 1 that a car manufacturer like the Volkswagen Group confirm their arrival,” he told Motorsport.com .

“It is a signal to all the other manufacturers in the world. It shows the importance and the step we have taken as a competition in recent years.”

“A couple of seasons ago it was impossible to imagine, but now we are even talking about two manufacturers, two VW Group brands, with confirmation from Audi and most likely from Porsche . So I think it’s a great thing for F1.”

“I think Audi has been successful wherever it has gone. And I am absolutely convinced that if they embark on this new programme, they are serious about it and they will succeed sooner or later. I have no doubts about that,” concluded Capito .
