In popular culture, the expression “it’s a classic” is very common to refer to very good cinematographic works without giving much importance to the date on which they were released. However, classical cinema corresponds to a specific historical period in Hollywood (1900-1960) in which a series of traditional films were produced, which did not introduce disruptive elements. With the purchase of the Metro Goldwyn Mayer by Amazon we will have great classics that will be possible to see from the platform. These are only 7 of them: 1- “The Machinist of La General” (1927) “The Machinist of La General” (MGM) Moviegoers around the world do not decide on who has more relevance in the history of the beginnings of classic cinema, whether Charles Chaplin or Buster Keaton. The truth is that both were true geniuses behind the cameras and also as actors, at a time when silent films forced an almost mimicry expressiveness. At the time it was a failure of the critics and at the box office, however today it is considered one of the great classics of cinema. 2- “Modern Times” (1936) “Modern Times” (MGM) Chaplin’s great criticism of worker exploitation during the Great Depression. It has a mixture of silent and sound films in certain parts of the story, due to the transition period that was lived at that time thanks to the incorporation of the necessary technology. At the end of so much work and futuristic assembly line, Chaplin’s character will lose his mind. 3- “The Stagecoach” (1939) “The Stagecoach” (MGM) It is considered the first adult western that would help revive a genre that John Ford would revisit so often in his career. In the film, a group of different people have to cross in a stagecoach a dangerous territory besieged by the Indians. 4- “Rebecca” (1940) “Rebecca” (MGM) The first film that Alfred Hitchcock shot in the United States and one of the great classics of the director. This drama based on the homonymous novel by Daphne du Maurier was performed by Joan Fontaine and Laurence Olivier. It is a romance in which the mystery and psychological game advance with the plot until the disagreement and final outcome. 5- “The night of the hunter” (1955) “The night of the hunter” (MGM) One of the most important roles remembered of Robert Mitchum who had for his role the knuckles tattooed with the words Love (love) and hate (hate). The film swims between the terror of this villain and the flight of some children and their predator. Like a nightmare that never ends, Harry Powell represents the dualities of the villain who behaves sweetly in society and the maniac who is moved by darkness in private and in the shadows.6- “12 men without mercy” (1957) «12 men without mercy Piedad »(MGM) One of the best raw operas in the history of cinema. Sidney Lumet put in check with an almost theatrical staging the 12 men of a jury who must decide on the fate of a young man accused of murder. What at first seems clear, reveals a whole series of subjectivities reflected in the personal problems of these men.7- “Senderos de Gloria” (1957) “Senderos de gloria” (MGM) The war film about Stanley’s anti-warmongering Kubrick, a trench warfare where you must decide who is sent to die. Three randomly named soldiers are summoned to a court martial to decide on their lives. Were they cowards or did they just fight for their lives?
