When the first snows of winter arrive on the vast plains of Mongolia, the hunting season for Kazakh falconers begins. For 4000 years they have beaten the stages of Mongolia with their eagles.
Hunters ride daily through the Altai Mountains, on the western border with China, Russia and Kazakhstan. They usually settle on the great peaks, from where they can see much more land, and launch their eagles.
UNESCO included falconry in its list of intangible heritage in 2010.
The large size of the predator leaves no chance for this fox (see video) to escape. The prey scrambles, and even takes bites; but the eagle has nailed its great claws into the body of the animal, which will quickly die.
