The multidimensional impact of psoriasis, under debate for its World Day

Did you know that 2.3 out of every 100 Spaniards currently suffer from psoriasis? This percentage means that more than a million people in Spain suffer from this pathology.

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease in which a reaction, caused by genetic and environmental factors, triggers a cycle in the renewal of skin cells that occurs in an accelerated way, which leads to the accumulation of dead cells that form plaques. .

However, despite the visible physical consequences that it can cause, it is a disease that affects people’s mental and emotional health. Therefore, it is a pathology with multidimensional impact that requires a very specific and multidisciplinary clinical approach in the healthcare space.

This pathology is diagnosed before the age of 40 in 75 percent of patients, with the two peaks of appearance being around 20 and 50 years of age.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Report on Psoriasis, psoriasis is “a chronic, painful, disfiguring and disabling non-communicable disease for which there is no cure and which has a great negative impact on the quality of life of patients ”. In this sense, the WHO itself already put on the table in 2014 the relevance of combating the stigma and exclusion of people with psoriasis, as well as the deficiencies in its diagnosis and treatment.

For these reasons, the next #DiaMundialPsoriasis, which is held on Friday, October 29, will bring together rheumatologists, dermatologists and patients in a virtual debate with the aim of addressing the management of the disease and treatment strategies.

The virtual debate, which has the support of Janssen, will be held at 11 am and will be broadcast online, through the Gaceta Médica website and Muy Interesante’s social networks.
