The pandemic has left us very hard stories, but fortunately also many with a happy ending, such as Kelsey Townsend, 32, who has just been discharged and was finally able to see her baby’s face for the first time, three months after giving birth .
The mother was diagnosed with Covid in the final stretch of pregnancy, with nine months of pregnancy. Shortly after, she was admitted to the hospital due to shortness of breath, cough, and pneumonia. His blood oxygenation levels were less than 40 percent, when normal is 95 percent.
As her situation worsened, she was induced into a coma and a cesarean section was performed on November 4 so that little Lucy was born, who tested negative for the virus and then joined the rest of the family at home.
The mother’s health continued to deteriorate and she required transfer to the UW Health center in Madison, where she spent several months on a ventilator. Even in late December the doctors said she would need a double lung transplant.
” There was not much certainty that she would go home . There were many nights when I got phone calls from doctors saying they didn’t think I was going to make it through the night – it was an emotional roller coaster,” her husband Derek tells CBSNews.

But thankfully she started to improve significantly, so much so that she was taken out of the intensive care unit, taken off the ventilator in mid-January, and taken off the transplant waiting list.
Finally, on January 27, she was discharged and was able to touch her newborn baby for the first time , as well as reunite with the rest of her family, since the couple has three more children.
“We instantly bonded when we met. He gave me a big smile and looked at me like he knew exactly who I was and that made me feel very happy, ”the mother told CTVNews.
