A mother has her twins while she was sedated in the ICU for Covid-19 and upon waking she does not remember that she was pregnant

Her name is Mili América Antelo, she is 40 years old and has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Hospital de Vall d’Hebron in Barcelona with severe pneumonia due to Covid-19.

Mili was intubated for 21 days and during that time sedated her twins were born by cesarean section. When she woke up, she didn’t even remember her pregnancy. This has been explained by Dr. Felix Castillo, Head of the Neonatology Service of the Barcelona center on his Twitter account along with an image of the happy mother with her daughters.

Another of the harsh consequences of this virus that has us still confined at home, although like this mother we already see the light at the end of the tunnel.

The twins weighed just one kilo each

Ayma and Ayla were born in the 28th week of pregnancy by cesarean section , while their mother remained sedated. But, as Dr. Félix Castillo explains, the woman “when she woke up, she did not remember her pregnancy.”

So much less was he aware that his daughters had been born weighing only one kilogram each and that they were in incubators. In fact, he says that when he opened his eyes he did not even know where he was. Confused, she just wondered why her husband wasn’t with her.

On March 27, Mili was admitted to the Vall d’Hebron hospital in Barcelona with severe pneumonia due to Covid-19, and was transferred to the pediatric ICU, converted into an ICU for pregnant women.

According to the Chief of Newborns in El País, “he was fatal, with severe respiratory failure, and a cesarean section had to be extracted in week 28”, two days later.

Luckily all this has been left behind and after fighting to survive, the three are together. As proof of this wonderful news, Dr. Castillo has published an image of Mili practicing the kangaroo method for the first time with her daughters in the neonatology area of the Vall d’Hebron Hospital. The mother has had to wait until she was negative, 30 days after her daughters were born, to be able to make “skin to skin” with them, the best way to help these premature babies to get ahead, even in times of coronavirus.

Dr. Castillo points out to the newspaper El País that being disoriented and having lost recent memory is common after being sedated for 21 days with very powerful drugs:

“Between 25% and 30% of patients suffer it and improve within a few days. What is most striking is the amnesia before admission. A small lesion was found on the MRI that was classified as a possible stroke , but I am not sure that this can interfere with memory ”.

The meeting between the mother and her twins was long overdue, but at the sight of her smile, the moment was incredible. Now they have a whole life ahead of them to forget the nightmare of a premature birth due to a virus called Covid-19, in which the twins have tested negative. Mili is now discharged but will have to wait another five weeks to take her twins home.
