New research carried out by a team of scientists from the Blue Marble Institute for Space Science in Seattle (USA) has determined that María Elena Sur (MES), also in the well-known desert, is a much drier area than Yungay .
As the study concludes, the new driest place on Earth had a mean atmospheric relative humidity (RH) of 17.3% and a RH in the soil with a constant 14% at a depth of one meter .
Curiously, this last value coincides with the data sent by the Curiosity rover in the Gale crater of the neighboring planet Mars, which equates the driest place on the planet with the conditions presented by the red planet .
If the Atacama Desert is the driest place, Death Valley is the hottest . The intense heat wave that suffered the southwestern United States in 2013 made this area of the Mojave Desert (USA) the hottest on Earth with the highest temperature ever recorded: 56.7 degrees Celsius.
