As a matter of biological clock or not, the truth is that new research carried out by the Cancer Research Institute of London (United Kingdom) has concluded that the habit of leaving a light on to sleep is counterproductive since it could favor the obesity
For the study, the researchers involved 113,000 women who had to evaluate the amount of light present in their rooms and classify them into four different categories: enough light to read, to see in the room but not enough to read, to see a hand placed in front or too dark to see a hand placed in front of us.
The analysis of the responses that was later compared with their body mass index (BMI), waist-hip index and waist circumference, measures to delimit the level of overweight and obesity of the participants, revealed that all these measures were higher in the women who slept with some kind of light in the bedroom .
“It is the largest group of people in which an association has been observed between reported light exposure at night and being overweight and obese ; despite everything, there is not enough evidence to know if 'darkening' the bedroom can have consequences on body weight ”, says Anthony Swerdlow, leader of the study.
The work has been published in the American Journal of Epidemiology .
