Many researches have already valued the positive effects of living with a pet. We share a lot of things with our faithful friends. Some even to bed. While this may be shocking to some people, a recent study carried out by the Mayo Clinic Sleep Center in Scottsdale, Arizona (USA), has found that although it may be counterproductive, since its movement or their noises when sleeping can wake us up, the fact of feeling close to our pet compensates since it can be beneficial for rest.
How does having our pet in the bedroom affect sleep? People who sleep with dogs rest better because they feel more secure and calm than those who do not. This is the conclusion of the research that started with 150 patients, of which 74 owned at least one pet (mostly dogs and cats).
After conducting a questionnaire on all the participants, it was found that 56% of pet owners allowed them to sleep with them, either in the bedroom or in their own bed. Of them, 41% revealed that not only was it not harmful to sleep with their dog or cat but it also helped them sleep, giving them a feeling of security, company and tranquility.
“Health professionals who work with patients with sleep problems should ask about the environment when sleeping at home and, in particular, the presence of pets, to help them find solutions and optimize their sleep “, explains Lois Krahn, leader of the work.
The study has been published in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings journal.
