Too much protein in adulthood is just as bad as smoking

Despite the fact that a high protein diet can help us lose weight and fat in the short term, two new studies conclude that in the long term excess protein can affect our health and reduce our life span . Both studies have been published in the journal Cell Metabolism .

The first study , led by a team of researchers from the University of Southern California (USA), was based on the analysis of data from a survey that assessed the health and diet of more than 6,800 individuals. The researchers defined that a diet was high in protein when at least 20% of the calories consumed came from protein. Examination of the results showed that consuming a large amount of protein was linked to an increased risk of cancer, diabetes, and death in middle-aged adults (especially when the protein did not come from vegetables).

The second study came from the hand of a team of experts from the University of Sydney (Australia), who analyzed the effects of 25 different types of diets in hundreds of mice to see how different types of proteins, fats and carbohydrates affected them and also the uneven amounts of food, to your metabolic health, aging and lifespan. The conclusion of the mouse study determined that high-carbohydrate, low-protein diets were linked to longer life.

The two studies suggest that it is not only a question of establishing measure in the calories of the food, but also in the composition of the diet, especially in terms of quantity and type of protein consumed , if what we want is to have a healthy and long life.
